007 is set to be a very special year.
Author of Vegan Tony Bishop-Weston is predicting in the number of Vegans will double during 2007. Judging by the number of new vegan groups such as The Secret Society of Vegans, Vegan Secret Agents at Double 07, Vegan Pirates, new websites such as Supervegans, Da Vegan Code, and even a vegan political party called Animals Count hoping for seats in the European Parliament – he may be right.
And that's just the tip of the vegan iceberg - in Bristol, Tim Barford from hemp product company Yaoh is planning what he hopes will be the world's biggest ever vegan festival.
Meanwhile London Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston is predicting 2007 will be the year of the seed and suggests that a good new year's resolution for health food stores should be 'stock more hemp!'
The Vegan Society had a big shake up at the AGM on World Vegan Day and big things are expected from the new directors, the dynamic new team and bigger premises in Birmingham during 2007.
Certainly the future of the planet is hanging in the balance – the more people who switch on to the solutions that veganism (and hemp!) have to offer then the more chance we have of avoiding our slide towards ill health, environmental catastrophe and oblivion.
Make a difference to people, human health, animal welfare and the environment - make your new years resolution to go vegan !!

More Evidence of Vegetarians High IQ
High IQ link to being vegetarian
Intelligent children are more likely to become vegetarians later in life, a study says.
A Southampton University team found those who were vegetarian by 30 had recorded five IQ points more on average at the age of 10.
Researchers said it could explain why people with higher IQ were healthier as a vegetarian diet was linked to lower heart disease and obesity rates.
The study of 8,179 was reported in the British Medical Journal.
Does this mean people with Low IQ are more likely to eat at McDonalds? A study someone?

Burberry Targetted By Animal Welfare Activists
Bloody Burberry - When Plaid Goes Bad
The new CEO at Burberry who moved from Liz Claiborne Inc (DKNY) was head hunted Burberry to save the flagging brand since the Chavs adopted it.
Perhaps she could have chosen an image that wasn't so stereotypical "Rich spoilt bitch I don't care about anyone or anything else" type of profile.
Certainly the shareholders and investors won't be best pleased that she's incured the wrath of PeTA. That won't be good for the share price. The boys in the City don't need many excuses to start dumping shares and the value of the already pressured stock will plummet. PeTA's new fur campaign will no doubt hit Burberry's projected 23% increase in retail revenues for 2006.
PeTA say "Burberry may be best known for its distinctive plaid, but its use of real fur is making the design house synonymous with cruelty to animals. Burberry continues to use fur in its designs despite the fact that leading clothing retailers like Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Ann Taylor, Polo Ralph Lauren, and others have pulled fur from their stores forever."
Burberry say "Good workplace standards, health and safety, fair pay and fair employment conditions together with care for the environment are all elements of a successful and professionally run business. It is our responsibility to ensure that these expectations are also met in our supply chain, where both good and poor performance has the ability to impact on Burberry’s reputation."
Case of "put your money where your mouth is" we think.
PeTA's new Burberry website exposes some of the cruelties of the fur trade. There is a video with commentary by Stella McCartney

Govt Accused of radical Extremism on Environment
UK Government radical Extremists say UK Vegans
"Salvation for the planet lies in hemp not hype" says leading UK Vegan Tony Bishop-Weston
"Instead of madcap taxes the Government should do more to tackle the mad CAP (common agricultural policy) subsidies for the meat and dairy industry and invest in sustainable alternatives for food and energy such as hemp" says Bishop-Weston.
"Things will only change if the sustainable alternatives are more easily available and the price of things contributing to the destruction of our health and planet are left to reflect the true cost of production." he adds.

Vegan Food Saves Environment
Vegans Sales of Vegan & Free From Foods saves Environment
Vegan companies such as Plamil tend to have a broader outlook on business ethics, it's not just a focus on health foods, they look at ethics and environmental issues too.
Plamil have been given consistently high marks for their products by Ethical Consumer magazine, source the bulk of their ingredients from worker co-operatives where possible and are converting their chocolate factory over to using more sustainable 100% renewable energy -- possibly a world first for confectionery manufacturing.
"The market for Free-From foods has increased dramatically over recent years but local independent retailers are now beginning to take advantage and catch this emerging market" says MD AdrianLing.
" We have wide range dairy free and egg free products to fill the gaps on the local retailers' shelves and help them take full advantage of a growing market for environmentally friendly health foods"

Teens 'smoke to have small babies' - Yahoo! News UK
Teens 'smoke to have small babies' - Yahoo! News UK
London Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston said "This is ridiculous - young mothers are pointlessly endangering not only their baby's long term health but also their own. The baby's head is likely to be around the same size despite the smaller body and it's the head that's most difficult to get out. In addition smoking is really bad for the skin so the likelihood of horrendous stretch marks is far greater"
Pregnant teenagers are deliberately smoking in the hope of having smaller babies so giving birth is easier, it has been reported.
Public health minister Caroline Flint spoke at a Labour Party conference fringe meeting about teenagers' attempts to reduce their labour pains, the Nursing Standard magazine reported.
Smoking can lead to low birthweight babies, meaning some teenagers smoke throughout pregnancy, the magazine said.
The Department of Health said Ms Flint had heard about the issue anecdotally from health professionals and young women she has met.
Ms Flint said: "It is important that we understand what stops young women making healthy choices so we can provide the right answers to their concerns.
"In this case, childbirth is no less painful if your baby is low weight. So smoking is not the answer, pain relief is."
Studies have shown that women who smoke during pregnancy are three times more likely to have a low birthweight baby. Smoking can also cause other problems, such as respiratory illness.
Women who smoke are less likely to carry their babies to full term and there is a 26% increased risk that they will miscarry or experience stillbirth.
Babies of smoking mothers are also an average of 200g (7oz) lighter at birth.
Royal College of Midwives (RCM) midwife Gail Johnson said there was no evidence that having a smaller baby reduced pain in labour. She said: "It is vital that the risks associated with smoking are highlighted and that women are then supported to make changes to their lifestyle but the RCM is very clear that there is no evidence that the size of the baby relates to the amount of pain the woman may experience."

Vegan Society AGM - Sparks Will Fly
Vegan Society AGM 2006 It's promised sparks will fly as active members of The Vegan Society try to bring it's governing body, strategic planning and campaigning, kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. Members are urged to attend not just for the celebrations afterwards but to be a voice of reason at The Vegan Society Annual General Meeting 2006.
For a small UK charity The Vegan Society has admirably managed to make huge changes to the world we live in, the way we think about life, the way people shop and the way we live.
But for the many new converts to veganism it's not enough. Unlike some of the older vegans who appear humbled by the small changes we now take for granted the new vegans are not prepared to accept a status of second class citizen. They want and expect the same service, quality, value for money, convenience and enjoyment from life as they had before they became vegan and they want it now. It infuriates them and their friends that restaurants would prefer to ignore their preferences or charge the same price for a low value vegetable side dish as their friends are paying for the expensive meat or fish dish.
These new vegans are no longer just academics, amateur philosophers, musicians, students or unemployed anarchists with plenty of time on their hands. They are IT executives, Doctors, marketing and PR gurus, designers, chefs, authors, dieticians, fireman, company directors, food manufacturers, financial directors and accountants, city bankers, journalists, broadcasters, athletes, property developers, market anaylists, and business consultants.
They want to see a slick new vegan society that behaves in more professional, dynamic and pro-active way - mere existence is not enough they have much higher goals and agendas.
The Vegan Society's AGM 2006 in London is set to be one that could make or break the future of the world. If the Vegan Pandora is allowed to fully escape out of the box that Donald Watson opened in 1944 then this most logical, simple, practical solution to some of the biggest dilemas that face mankind could become totally infectious and create a world epidemic of common sense.
There are a number of motions being put forward and despite the present undemocratic regimes best attempts to hang on to the cliquey status quo it's hoped the old guard will finally be thwarted. The hope is that the intimidation, lies, political backstabbing, and procrastination will finally be flushed down the toilet and a new more vibrant vegan society will emerge capable of taking on the global corporations that are ruining the world in the name of short term profits.
Some people suggest that The Vegan Society has been infiltrated by a competitive industrial body - the aim being to do just enough to exist and avoid suspician but to sterilise, make all innovations and campaigns ineffectual and impotent. It would be easy to fall for this conspiracy theory given the many projects that have been completed but never put into action. Coupled with big legacies that have just been frittered away on running costs rather than invested in the future and a planned move to Birmingham????? it's easy to get suspicious.
Those on the inside know that fear is the biggest complications. "The controlling trustees are just plain scared of what they don't understand, can't comprehend and have no experience of. They are afraid to enter into the territory of the world's arena preferring the safety and comfort of their little cliquey world where they can feel important, clever and in control. They surround themselves with amateurs and sycophants who perpetuate their delusions of grandeur. Anyone who tries to change things in their particular area of expertise is patronised or outmanoevered with petty committee politics." says one ex member of staff.
No wonder so many people have got frustrated and left in recent years. The good news for veganism is that they have nearly all gone on to bigger and better things.
There is a move to change the constitution of The Vegan Society so that trustees are recruited in set areas of expertise and are designated individual responsibility for key functions of The Vegan Society that will benefit from their experience and qualifications.
In this way it's hoped to stop the culture of "intefering busybody" where instead of getting involved in scary areas of IT, media, marketing, legislation and PR where they are unconfident they get involved in accounts, merchandising and publishing and get away with opinions rather than productive results.
" I'm always amazed how much The Vegan Society gets mentioned- they've not had a formal Press Officer for 3 years" says Tony Bishop-Weston author of Vegan - (a healthy diet cookbook)
Anyone with an interest in furthering Veganism is encouraged to both vote for change and attend the Vegan Society AGM in London - See Vegan Society AGM 2006 for details.

McDonalds to be sued for misleading advertising
Pelman v. McDonald's Corp.
New York Law Journal
September 22, 2006 - McDonalds Must Answer Complaint Alleging Deception as to Nutritional Benefits of Its Food says judge.
While late-night comedians joked when a New York lawyer filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s in 2002 for making his clients sick and obese, the fast food giant is now finding itself one step closer to the courtroom door. As reported today by the New York Law Journal (sub req’d) regarding the case of two teenagers, known as “Pelman v. McDonald’s”:
Southern District Judge Robert Sweet has refused to grant the company’s latest motion to dismiss, saying that parents of children who are obese and suffered other health problems — allegedly because of McDonald’s food — provided enough specific examples of allegedly misleading advertising to allow the suit to go forward.

Vegan Revolution Needed to Feed The World
15/09/2006 - The FAO has called for a second Green Revolution to feed the world's growing population while preserving natural resources.
Addressing a meeting of the World Affairs Council of Northern California in San Francisco, FAO director-General Jacques Diouf said that a major international effort was needed to feed the world when the population soars from six to nine billion.
"The new Green Revolution will be less about introducing new, high-performance varieties of wheat or rice, important as they are, and much more about making wiser and more efficient use of the natural resources available to us," he said.
Diouf added that the original Green Revolution of the Fifties and Sixties doubled world food production by bringing the power of science to agriculture, but relied on the lavish use of inputs such as water, fertilizer and pesticides.
The task ahead may well prove harder.
"We not only need to grow an extra one billion tonnes of cereals a year by 2050 - within the lifetimes of our children and grandchildren but do so from a diminishing resource base of land and water in many of the worlds regions, and in an environment increasingly threatened by global warming and climate change," he said.

Jamie's School Dinners - Food Most Fowl
See the animated cartoon for kids about what goes into food designed for children.
Luckily the government, nutritionists, School Foods Trust and Caroline Walker Trust have all agreed that rectum, testicles, lung, udder, feet and other tasty tidbits should no longer be in school food for children.
London Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston says there is still much work to be done.

Omega 3 from Fish Oils not sustainable
Fish Oil IQ test a red herring says leading London nutritionist on ITN - Video
Founder of Foods For Life Yvonne Bishop-Weston tells ITV ITN reporter Chris Choi that Fish oil is not a long term solution for UK school children. "It's unsustainable both financially and environmentally"
ITN report microscopic sea plants ( Algae )may be a cheaper more environmentally friendly option to address the predicament of low levels of omega 3 long chain fatty acids DHA and EPA in childrens diets.
Meanwhile Jamie Oliver star of Jamies School Dinners on Channel 4 says parents who fail to properly feed their children are "arseholes and tossers"
Yvonne says parents should be more responsible but not blamed as the people who they look to for guidance such as Doctors and Schools have a limited understanding of nutrition themselves.
"When you have Burger King offering Hospital Catering (Croydon, Southampton, Cambridge) it's a bit harsh to start calling parents rude names - Mr Oliver needs to aim his fully loaded barrels a bit higher!" advises Yvonne.
New interim guidelines for caterers of school meals were released by DfES , SFT and Govt this week. Free water has to be made available, less fatty and sugary foods, and it's now illegal to feed school children testicles, rectum, udder, feet and other nasty smelly bits of animals often hidden in sausages, burgers and twizzlers.

Vegetarians Win BBC Test The Nation
Vegetarians Win BBC Test The Nation - Results
It seems that if you want the best IQ then 2 secrets may be to be a vegetarian and go to public school.
In The BBC's Test the Nation programme testing for IQ it was the vegetarians that won followed by the ex public school boys.
London Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston from Foods For Life says "This Vegetarian win supports advice that a diet richer in fruit and vegetables, nuts and seeds is better for sustainable healthy brain function"
Just as well the Vegetarians won - they were up against the butchers, estate agents and footballers wives - if they'd have lost against any of them it would have been a bit of a PR disaster for The Vegetarian Society who fielded 4 staff members amongst the 30 strong team.
IQ Test your Vegetarian or Vegan brain power and intelligence!

Burger King Extremists Bid to Save The World
Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | Oliver Burkeman reports on 'extreme dining' in the US
Fast Food Giants Do The World A Favour.
The Final Solution - Natural selection - Save the World! - Kill the really dumb people!
Burger King and other Fast Food Giants in the USA have finally realised the only sustainable way forward for the planet and the human race is veganism. Having failed to entice their clientele with vegan offerings of fresh fruit and salad and other "healthy options" they have realised that some of their customers are just too dumb to see sense. The final solution? Give them enough rope to hang themselves - kill them off as quickly as possible - enter the "Burger King Stacker Quad" , Denny's Extreme Grand Slam Breakfast or Hardee’s Thickburger (for real thickies?) 70% of your recommended daily calorific intake in a single meal!
And they call PeTA members and vegans extremists?!?!??

Milk "Less Fresh" scheme costs £1m
BBC NEWS | England | Cornwall | Dairy farmers get 1m for upgrade
More than £1m of EU funding has been awarded to Cornish dairy farmers to help them improve their facilities.
The Objective One money has come from Cornwall Enterprise's Dairy Collect service. It aims to make the industry more sustainable in the county.
As part of the scheme, milk on farms is chilled more efficiently and in larger quantities, so buyers' tankers can visit every other day instead of daily.
Nearly 90 farms will benefit from the next round of cash.
Not only will this be another nail in the coffin of the Dairy Industry as it ensures milk is less fresh but also will offer incentives to farmers to include milk contaminated with pus, ivermectin, anti biotics and other contaminates to reach volumes required for bonusses.

No Diet Pill Just Healthy Diet For Fat Vegan
The Fat Vegan Project
Chris from Gloucestershire Veggie Fayre has embarked on his Fat Vegan Project. On his new blog he tells us
"Over a year period I will attempt to lose weight to finally get down to my healthy weight (around 11 - 12 stone) which I was only 6 years ago. If you were to listen to most experts they would tell you that in order to lose weight you might want to cut down on dairy and meat... Well Im a vegan and Im knocking on 22 stone.
With help from some vegan nutrition experts, the vegan business comunnity and moral support from friends and family we hope to raise some serious
money for vegan / animal charities."
Chris will be helped by London Nutritionist, founder of Foods For Life, ION (Institute of Optimum Nutrition) tutor and co Author of "Vegan" - Yvonne Bishop-Weston.
She says "Following all the publicity about the new diet pill this is perfect timing by Chris to prove the best way to loose weight is a weight loss diet based on a healthy diet"
Chris is living proof that a Vegan diet or Vegetarian diet is not always necessarily good protection against putting on weight. There are plenty of high calorie, high carbohydrate, high sugar, high fat foods and drinks that are vegan.
"With help from a Personal Trainer I hope to help Chris gradually lose weight so that the fat loss is sustainable and he ends up as a shining example of how healthy you can be on a 100% plant based vegan diet."

Not Enough Fish in The Sea for Non Vegetarian Omega 3
Not everyone is delighted at the Govt's plans to dose children with omega 3 DHA and EPA (see Independent - Omega 3 on the menu)
London Nutritionist and founder of Foods For Life Yvonne Bishop-Weston says that "Apart from the issues of toxity in fish from dioxins, PCB's, xeno-oestrogens and heavy metals there are simply not enough fish in the sea for this type of mass dosing of omega 3 DHA and EPA from fish."

Vegan artist Eats whole cow
British artist Damian Hirst famously pickled whole animals. Now, a Portuguese vegan artist from Glasgow School of Fine Art has arranged an installation that will encourage members of the public to eat a whole cow. But is it art?
Glasgow, UK (PRWEB) June 18, 2006 -- 25 year old artist Zoe Birrell’s work is featured as part of Glasgow School of Arts’ Degree Show -- An annual exhibition of final year work from Fine Art, Architecture and Design.
The Times Newspaper and the Independent Newspaper have both chosen Glasgow School of Arts’ Degree show as the best Art show to visit in Scotland.
The Times said: "This is the best opportunity to discover artists before their reputations and prices soar the Independent described the event as ‘one of the 'best degree shows' outside of London."
Vegetarian since the age of 14 and a Vegan for the last 5 years Zoe decided to explore the issues of intensively farmed animals related to her own femininity. The life of the modern dairy cow, kept perpetually pregnant and thus full of hormones whilst suffering the emotional stress of loss of her baby calf inspired Zoe to focus on these psychological and physiological issues and the ethical alternatives.
Zoe has cast her own body weight of delicious dairy free vegan chocolate, donated by Plamil Foods, into a herd of 420 chocolate cows, 300 of which the public will be invited to purchase and eat.

Fish in Omega 3 Fortified Milk, Eggs & Cheese is Vegetarian Society's Worst Nightmare
Something Fishy Going On? Omega 3 Fortified Milk, Eggs & Cheese is Vegetarian Society Worst Nightmare
Despite publicity about toxity in fish, and unsustainability of fish stocks, fish oils are increasingly being added to dairy products to increase levels of omega 3 essential fatty acids. This could be The Vegetarian Society's worst nightmare as milk, cheese, yoghurts and margarine are no longer acceptable for a vegetarian diet. However a new vegetarian EPA Omega 3 product could save their veggie bacon.
A Report from Flora margarine says that 80% of consumers are concerned that they are not getting enough Omega 3.
Even the BMJ admit there are not enough fish in the sea to cope with present demand.
Algae based Vegetarian DHA EPA seems the logical answer. See V-Pure from Water 4 Life for more info.

Big Brother Tony Blair Liar Liar Bum's on Fire
Telegraph | News | Tony Blair: Time to act against animal rights protesters
Big Brother Tony Blair prove's he's a Liar Liar Bum's on Fire Bliar Bliar writing in the Torygraph.
"Many millions more will be spared an early death or a life of pain because of the research now under way. They deserve our support. And they should get it."
Meanwhile innocent campaign administrators have been arrested and sent to jail despite no evidence that they have actually done anything apart from run a successful campaign and print leaflets, send emails and run websites.
Blair talks about keeping shareholders and company directors names a secret - is this guy masonic or demonic?
Little wonder Labour did so badly in the local elections - they've well and truly lost the bunny vote.
It seems he is intent on being big pharma's puppet in protecting their illegal activities and disgusting inhumane torture. He has no excuse - he has been shown undercover evidence of what goes on and HLS's illegal activities but obviously the hand up his backside is too big to allow him to stop licking these criminal's bottoms.

The Da Vegan Code
In the fire that was the oxmoronic world of vegan Jehad there is a new wind.
Sleeping beneath the foundations of the pillars of the knights of new world order lies an ancient power far beyond the comprehension of the new world order puppets.
Ye who fears change shall fear deeper.

Red Tractor Drives Roughshod On Animal Wellfare
Red Tractor Happy Meat is an Oxymoron
PM helps launch Red Tractor Day Downing Street Reports:
Tony Blair has backed a scheme which helps shoppers easily find UK-produced fresh food.
He helped launch "Red Tractor Day" as a full-size red tractor pulled in Downing Street.
The scheme allows producers to use a distinctive logo on packs of food which meet its strict set of criteria.
These standards cover animal welfare, food transport, processing and packing.
Mr Blair said:
"Six years ago I helped launch the Red Tractor logo. Last year it appeared on over £5bn worth of food.
The Red Tractor scheme claims it's Farmers must care for their animals by following the Five Freedoms welfare code (freedom from hunger & thirst; discomfort; pain, injury or disease; fear or distress; freedom to express normal patterns of behaviour).
This doesn't mean what you'd think it means - for example 'normal patterns of behaviour only mean normal for an animal caged and trapped with little or no light or mental and physical stimulation and deprived to fulfil basic intincts such as caring for their young and running or making a nest.
One look at the Red Tractor farms exposed by Hillside Animal Sanctuary show this scheme to by a farce and meaningless when it comes to animal welfare. Health seems to only apply to health that would endanger human life not the health of the animals (vetinary bills are expensive)

Bernard Matthews Battered Turkey in Bird Baseball Horror
Bernard Mathews THE BIRD BATTERER: "By Jeremy Armstrong
TURKEYS at a Bernard Matthews farm were thrown in the air and battered with a pole in scenes of 'appalling cruelty' filmed by undercover investigators. "
The footage was taken by an undercover investigator from Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Frettenham, Norfolk. He secretly filmed the farm workers on Friday in the shed, which holds thousands of birds for Bernard Matthews' multi-million pound empire.
The investigator, a 50-year-old cameraman who has worked extensively for the BBC, Channel 4 and newspapers over the past nine years, said: "This is by far the worst cruelty that I have witnessed. When he hit the birds it made a terrible sound. It was sickening."
It is not the first time alleged cruelty has been exposed at a farm run by Bernard Matthews, famed for his catchphrase "Boo tiful, really bootiful" and Turkey Twizzlers slated by TV chef Jamie Oliver in his crusade for healthier children's food.
Bernard Mathews was reported as having to take a massive paycut down from £1million to £595 million as he borrowed £130 million to buy out other shareholders after profits dropped 15% from £46 million to £39 million per year.
The Turkey Batterer Bird Baseball Video footage can be seen on Sky news - more info and footage at Hillside Animal Sanctuary

Vegan diets better for planet & people
Vegan diets better for planet and people: CHICAGO, April 13 (AScribe Newswire) -- The food that people eat is just as important as what kind of cars they drive when it comes to creating the greenhouse-gas emissions that many scientists have linked to global warming, according to a report accepted for publication in the journal Earth Interactions.
Both the burning of fossil fuels during food production and non-carbon dioxide emissions associated with livestock and animal waste contribute to the problem, the University of Chicago's Gidon Eshel and Pamela Martin wrote in the report.
The average American diet requires the production of an extra ton and a half of carbon dioxide-equivalent, in the form of actual carbon dioxide as well as methane and other greenhouse gases compared to a strictly vegetarian diet
In their study, Eshel and Martin compared the energy consumption and greenhouse-gas emissions that underlie five diets: average American, red meat, fish, poultry and vegetarian (including eggs and dairy), all equaling 3,774 calories per day.
The vegetarian diet turned out to be the most energy-efficient, followed by poultry and the average American diet. Fish and red meat virtually tied as the least efficient.
The impact of producing fish came as the study's biggest surprise to Martin, an Assistant Professor in Geophysical Sciences. 'Fish can be from one extreme to the other,' Martin said. Sardines and anchovies flourish near coastal areas and can be harvested with minimal energy expenditure. But swordfish and other large predatory species required energy-intensive long-distance voyages.
Martin and Eshel's research indicated that plant-based diets are healthier for people as well as for the planet. "

Vegetarian & Vegan labelling guidance from FSA
Vegetarian and Vegan labelling guidance from The Food Standards Agency
New UK guidance on food labelling for vegans and vegetarians builds on growing consumer demand for non-meat ingredients.
The guidance, drawn up by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) after consultation with stakeholders including The Vegetarian Society and The Vegan Society, will provide criteria for the use of the terms 'vegetarian' and 'vegan' on food labels for the first time.
The FSA estimates that there are 3.5 million vegetarians and 0.25 million vegans in the UK. The guidance is designed to make it easier for these consumers to identify the products that are suitable for them.
It also aims to prevent some common mistakes by companies such as labelling drink or food that has been derived from animal products or fish as suitable for 'vegans' and 'vegetarians'.
"There has been a lot of confusion over the use of the terms 'vegetarian' and 'vegan' on food labels both in the retail and catering sectors," said Dr Richard Harding, head of the FSA's consumer choice, food standards and special projects division.

vegetarians & Vegans in Liverpool - Paul McCartneys Home Town
I guess it was only a matter of time before (one of the most famous veggies in the world) Paul McCartney's home town Liverpool marked itself on the world map of growing veganism. With a guide to eating out in Liverpool and an opportunity to chat and have your picture posted it's only a matter of time before more even more scouse vegans come out of the closet.
Here's what the Liverpudlians say about their new website and blog.
ScouseVeg: "ScouseVeg is a social and campaigning group for vegetarians and vegans in and around Liverpool, Merseyside and the Wirral. We hold regular meetings - pub evenings, meals out, parties, pot luck suppers and other activities and events. The group is open to everyone - all ages, singles, couples, and families. So, something for everyone, and everyone is welcome!"
To the residents of Liverpool we say "Follow the McCartney family's lead - eat more vegan food, drink more vegan food and enjoy yourself as you make a difference to people, animals and the planet" - www.news.for-vegans.co.uk

More Reasons for Morrisons - Vegan Wine
Scotsman.com News - Features - Veggie wines would definitely get the thumbs-up from Sir Paul McCartney
Morrisons have joined Coop in taking the step to clearly label which of their wines are pure enough for people on vegan diets.
Vegetarians - and vegans, in particular - are concerned about some of the substances used as fining agents.
These include gelatine, isinglass, egg albumen, casein, chitosan and bentonite. Gelatine is made from animal protein, isinglass is made up of collagen fibres from the air bladders of fish; egg albumen is, of course, egg whites, casein is the primary protein in milk, and chitosan is derived from the shells of crustaceans.
Thankfully for veggies, the vast majority of wines these days are fined using bentonite (Fullers Earth) a mineral, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Morrisons have taken the situation on board by highlighting in their price list whether every wine on their stocks is "safe" for veggies and vegans. A massive task, but all part of the service.

Dutch to cull 3,500 pigs over dioxin
Dutch to cull 3,500 pigs over dioxin : "The Netherlands will cull about 3,500 pigs after the carcinogen dioxin was found in animal feed, announced the Dutch food safety authority VWA "
Pig fat with high levels of dioxin was an ingredient in their pig feed - Food safety officials have said the contamination came from a gelatin-making process at Belgian firm PB Gelatins.
You would think that the Meat and farming industry would learn from the BSE tragedy that turning animals into cannibals is a mistake. Cheap waste products in is a recipe for disaster.

Healthy Heart and Fertility for Valentine's Day? 'Eat More Vegan Food' Says London Nutritionist
Healthy Heart and Fertility for Valentine's Day? 'Eat More Vegan Food' Says London Nutritionist
London Nutritionist and author Yvonne Bishop-Weston strongly criticised the vegetarian food manufacturing industry and caterers last year for producing vegetarian and vegan foods that could do more harm than good.
At a series of meetings such as The Food and Drink Federation's Vegetarian and Vegan meat free manufacturers group she told the industry that the hydrogenated trans fats had to go.
"The public perception of vegetarian food was that it was far healthier than the meat dishes but often vegetarian options were laden with cheese and hydrogenated fat - healthiness just wasn't the reality" says Yvonne.
"In my clinics around London I often see the problems related to too much highly processed saturated fat in the diet and not enough essential fats such as omega 3 and 6. Essential fats are called essential for good reasonl, they are essential for the optimum health of nearly all bodily functions particularly brain, heart and fertility"
It seems the industry has listened and there has been widespread re formulating and relabelling of vegetarian and vegan products.Recipes for vegan sausages and the notorious Holland & Barrett vegan pork pies have been revised and hydrogenated fat has been substituted with more natural forms of oil.

Vegans on the March to take over World
The Observer | Food monthly | Peace, love and profit - meet the world's richest organic grocer
UK Retail Grocery trade and in particular Holland & Barrett with their vegan pork pies and stranglehold on the UK retail health food business should be looking out for this man.
John Mackey is a vegan who means business - a business valued at $5bn Sales are expected to top $12bn in the US by 2010.
He has spent £21 million taking over Fresh and Wild and is currently refurbishing London Department Store, Barkers to give us the UK's biggest ever Health Food & Wholefood Store. He has plans to have a whole Foods store in every major city in the UK.
Mackey asks: 'Are you familiar with Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs? His theory is that our first and most important needs are physical - food, water, sex. When those needs get met, other needs begin to assert themselves - safety, belonging, having a sense of love and friendship, then self-esteem. Beyond that it is self-actualisation.'
Whole Foods' journey to self-actualisation has taken time - some 25 years so far - and Britain is the company's first overseas investment. Mackey is anticipating a certain amount of scepticism. 'They said our first store in Austin would not work. Then they said it would not work outside Austin, that it would not work outside Texas, that we would never succeed in California or Chicago or New York. People dismissed us sort of a fad, just a bunch of weird food hippies. But we've proved them wrong everywhere we've gone, and we'll carry on.'
Over the last two-and-a-half decades, Mackey has proved almost everyone wrong and, in the process, has turned conventional business wisdom on its head. He has transformed 'hippy business' from a recipe for disaster to a prescription for world-beating - and, perhaps, world-changing - growth. Whole Foods is battling the industrialisation of farming. It sells natural food from reputable, small-scale suppliers.
