Whilst not wanting to diminish the fantastic efforts of the Band Aid musicians and pop stars for their efforts to reduce the suffering of people in West Africa suffering with Ebola ( Go buy the BandAid30 track if you haven't already), and I agree with Bob Geldof, a disease that prohibits you from comforting and touching loved ones is most abhorrant, meanwhile billions of other Earthlings' lives face torture and death unnecessarily, every Christmas, every year, every month, every week, every day, every hour, every minute, every second.

Every year it's estimated 56 billion farm animals (that's not even including all marine life e.g. smoked salmon  prawns, dolphins and whales) are tortured and killed just for fun. Just for our culinary entertainment, just to ammuse our tastebuds, just because we are too lazy and set in our ways to find vegan alternatives that taste just as good, are usually healthier , undoubtably have far less detrimental impact on the planet are fairer and just as nutritious.

Do the animals know it's Christmas ? No! So here are some new vegan / vegetarian lyrics to the Feed the World Christmas song to highlight that there are billions of lives of animals who don't know that it's Christmas time at all and it's business as usual for the people with the electric prods and stun guns and bolt guns and knives and saws sloshing about in a sea of blood.

Vegfest Brighton and Bristol Vegan Festival Fair Event

VegfestUK Brighton March 17th - 18th - It's a Sell Out All 125 stalls have sold out for VegfestUK Brighton on March 17th & 18th at The Hove Centre, making the event the second biggest 100% veggie festival, fair, exhibition event in Europe in 2012 for those interested in finding out more about health, sustainability, more ethical Vegetarian and Vegan lifestyles. With admission free to the public, crowds of up to 6,000 are anticipated over the two days, ready to indulge in an enormous selection of food and produce - all of it 100% plant based.

The event programme has been published and is available to download from the website at http://brighton.vegfest.co.uk/programe-of-events, and includes details of the stallholders, all the special offers available, the cookery demos, talks, product presentations, and the complete line-up of entertainment over the weekend, including live music, films and performance.

As usual at VegfestUK it is the food that is the star of the show, with 8 specialist caterers serving up a wonderful array of global cuisine, plus umpteen food producers exhibiting, many with new products and free samples and tasters, proving once again just how amazing veggie food can be. There's also some fun competitions at the event with the Great Veggie Burger and Sausage Competition catching the eye - 14 different veggie sausages and burgers to try, with the public deciding the winner. And there's also a veggie version of Ready Steady Chef taking place at 5pm both days with local chefs competing against each other top produce the best plant based meal inside 30 minutes in front of a live audience.

With all due respect surely Bullfighting, even with a plastic bull flies in the face of the spirit of Glastonbury - greener, kinder world

Would you get an American soldier from Iraq / Cuba to demonstrate on a plastic doll how he tortured and killed a muslim soldier?

How about inviting executors from various Muslim / African Countries to demonstrate on plastic dolls how they carry out the death penalty on homosexuals?

Will there be paintballing this year too? Pretend to kill your neighbour?

Virtual Seal Clubbing Tent ? Fill toy seals heads with Tomatoes from local farms and club them into ketchup?

Perhaps a mock Fox hunt where the hunt tramples over everyone's tents and the dogs tear apart a toy plastic fox stuffed with pasta in a rich sundried tomato and grilled red pepper sauce????

Or a Zombie set where the audience dress up as zombies and a Justin Bieber doll made out of bread and filled with an organic bloody mary cocktail is tossed into the zombie crowd and devoured on live BBCTV

No animals are actually hurt so where's the harm? - Doh!

That's the trouble with the dairy industry - just like in the egg industry the males of the species are just "waste product" - Male chicks get gassed or crushed alive and then chopped up the egg producers just need the females to lay eggs but nature maintains a balance of males to females so they are just garbage.

It's the same with Dairy farmers - the quandary 'what do we do with the male calves - the boys don't make milk - they are useless. These 6 calves were found chucked in a shed left to die, Farm Sanctuary saved them.

It appears that even the arch enemy of all vegetarians (except pseudo veggie Posh Spice Victoria Beckham) F Word TV chef, puffin and horse eating Gordon Ramsay has higher animal welfare standards than the founders of modern vegetarianism!

In a recent interview Gordon Ramsay revealed that he insists on buying meat for his restaurants that has been ethically bred and collected. "That's absolutely paramount," he said. "We have traceability across the board, where we have a certification of whether it's organic beef, or whether it's a hand-picked scallop or a line-caught sea bass."

A Campaigner from www.poor-cow.co.uk said today "We are hoping that Sir Paul McCartney will step in on the Battery Cow issue as he did on the GM issue that led to the Vegetarian Society banning GM ingredients in approved products. Paul McCartney has been a loyal patron of the Vegetarian Society and helped on many ocassions and we believe he will have serious concerns about both animal welfare and the dangers of genetically modified foods fed to cows"

Survey: Better Animal Welfare say 8 out of 10 Europeans

EU consumers are willing to make an extra effort to buy animal welfare friendly products, even if this means changing where they shop or paying more for goods, according to a Eurobarometer survey on attitudes to animal welfare, published today. The report shows, however, that citizens feel they lack the necessary information to distinguish between products on animal welfare grounds.

In the first EU survey on animal welfare to cover all 27 Member States, as well as Turkey and Croatia, 62% of respondents said that they would change their shopping habits in order to access more animal welfare friendly goods. The survey also revealed that citizens do not feel that they are provided with this option at the moment, due to insufficient information on animal welfare in food production. A large majority of respondents backed the idea of labelling or logos to indicate the animal welfare standards met in producing the foods they buy. The survey demonstrates general support for financially rewarding EU farmers who use better animal welfare practices.

Markos Kyprianou, Commissioner for Health, said "The message from EU citizens is clear – they view animal welfare as a priority and are willing to contribute to its promotion. The results of this survey are an affirmation of what the Commission is trying to achieve in the field of animal welfare and confirm that our efforts are a response to public demand for action in this area. The Commission attaches great importance to improving animal welfare both in the EU and internationally, and it is good to see that citizens support our efforts."

A priority for citizens

The Eurobarometer shows that animal welfare is an issue which EU citizens rank highly, giving it an 8 out of 10 on average in terms of importance. Most perceive that animal welfare has improved in their country over the last decade, although 77% still believe there is more to be done. Greeks (96%) Cypriots (91%) and Portuguese (90%) in particular would like more attention to be given to the wellbeing of animals in their country. The Eurobarometer also shows that citizens are in favour of further incentives to promote animal welfare in the EU. Over 70% of respondents supported the idea of financial rewards for producers who apply high animal welfare standards. There was also strong consensus (89%) that imports should have to be produced under the same animal welfare conditions as those originating in the EU.

Perceived benefits of animal welfare

In addition to the traditional ethical concerns that generate support for animal welfare, the wellbeing of animals during the production of food now appears to be strongly associated with the healthiness and quality of products. Over half of those surveyed perceived food produced in keeping with high animal welfare standards to be healthier than other food, while 48% said they thought it to be better quality.
