What do French Women like to Eat? Ask Brigitte Bardot?
How do French women eat?
USATODAY.com - The French diet connection: ''At the end of the day, we only have one body, and we need to respect, and we need to know what we put in, our body.''
As 'French Women Don't get fat' blasts into the no 10 bestseller list we ask 'What do French Women eat' Apparently they are very careful what they put in their mouths. Very choosy, but not obscessed - it's a question of Quality rather than quantity. It's about a sensuous way of eating.
More fruit and vegetables , drink plenty of water, eat a variety of seasonal foods and indulge in a treat once in a while.
'For France, a meal is a very particular moment, in which you share pleasure, the food as well as the conversation,' says L'Hermite. 'From an Anglo-Saxon point of view, food is just fuel to give energy to your muscles, you have no pleasure "

Antibiotics in milk - problem for MDC
The publication 'Quality Milk Production' How to avoid antibiotic failures examines the reasons for and effects of antibiotic contamination. The book is designed to help dairy producers and their farm staff establish a control procedure to eliminate the risk of antibiotic residues. It also contains a section on the routine procedures you will need to implement to avoid failure, and an emergency section on what to do if you think antibiotic contamination has taken place.
"Antibiotic contamination of milk on farm is an expense dairy farmers cannot afford," says Charlotte Bullock, research and development manager for MDC's Farm Management Programme.
"Milk purchasers have severe financial penalties for the presence of antibiotics in milk. Many will only pay 1p per litre for milk in the first instance and less for subsequent failures. Some purchasers will hand out a penalty equivalent to that day's collection, so the producer will end up receiving nothing for their milk that day.
"Furthermore, it's possible that losses incurred by the purchaser having to discard contaminated milk may also be passed to the producer. This could easily mount up as tanker loads of milk and the cost of cleaning could be included," she adds."
The EU has given over a million pounds to MDC to try to repair the poor image of dairy milk as people discover healthier alternative ways to get their calcium and vitamin D (artificially added to milk) and iodine (artificially added to milk) more naturally and avoid the dangers of legal somatic cell count (pus) and IGF1 growth hormone.

Vegan diet - stronger better bones?
BBC NEWS | Health | Raw food eaters thin but healthy: "People who follow a raw food vegetarian diet are light in weight but healthy, according to US researchers.
It has been suggested that eating only plant-derived foods that have not been cooked or processed might make bones thinner and prone to fractures.
But a study in Archives of Internal Medicine found although bones were lighter on this diet, turnover rates were normal with no osteoporosis.
The lower bone mass is down to raw food eaters being slim, believe the authors.
We recommend a varied, healthy, balanced diet which includes raw fruit and vegetables as well as other foods
Dr Fontana said the raw food diet group also had higher vitamin D levels than people on a typical Western diet, even though they did not consume dairy products which are known to be a good source of vitamin D. He said this was probably down to sun exposure.
The Vegetarian Society said "We recommend eating a healthy, well balanced vegetarian or vegan diet that includes 2-3 portions per day of high protein foods such as pulses, nuts, soya and wheat proteins, five portions of carbohydrates (the less refined the better), 2-3 portions of dairy products or calcium-enriched dairy alternatives and at least five portions of fruit and vegetables."
A spokesman for the National Osteoporosis Society said: "This is an interesting study which highlights the fact that low bone density is just one part of our overall risk of breaking bones.
"We would recommend that raw food vegans make sensible food choices to ensure they are taking in an adequate amount of calcium from a variety of foods and ensure they obtain good amounts of vitamin D from sensible exposure to sunlight."
Elaine Bruce, experienced naturopath, homeopath and director of the UK Centre for Living Foods, said calcium was important for building bones, but that inorganic calcium in the form of supplements would not do the job.
"You have to have organic calcium as it occurs in fresh green leafy vegetables. "What we do in our programme is maximise that intake by having it in juice form." She said that the chlorophyll found in green plants and vegetables also contained right amount of magnesium that is essential for the uptake of calcium for healthy bones.
"The chemical composition of chlorophyll and blood is very similar which further facilitates this uptake," she added.

The lack of animal protein in your diet may also make more calcium available for your bones..."

Delaying food introduction won't prevent allergies - Healthypages news
'It is probably not useful for children in families at high risk for [allergies] to delay the introduction of these foods.' However, additional studies are needed before definite conclusions and recommendations can be made, Dr. Berber J. Vlieg-Boerstra, who presented his team's work, told Reuters Health.
'The delayed introduction of highly allergenic foods is often recommended for the primary prevention of food allergy in high risk infants,' the researcher, based at University Hospital Groningen in the Netherlands, pointed out. 'For example, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends postponing the introduction of egg, fish, tree nut and peanuts until after the age of two or three.' But the efficacy of this approach is poorly documented.
To investigate, Vlieg-Boerstra and colleagues studied 41 children who were an average of six years old who had egg, soy, peanut and hazelnut eliminated from their diet from birth in an attempt to prevent the development of allergy to these foods.
The investigators used food challenge tests to determine the rate of clinical reactivity to the eliminated foods. The study included a placebo (control) group of 49 age-matched children with suspected food allergy who had not avoided these foods.
'We found no clinical differences in the number of positive [food challenge tests] or in the threshold dose between cases and controls,' Vlieg-Boerstra said. 'As many children in the primary prevention group as in the control g"

omega-3 fortifications for people who don't like fish.
Getting enough EPA and DHA in the diet is difficult, and 25 per cent of Americans do not eat fish at all. People are also slow to change eating patterns. Nine of the top ten food choice preferences in 2003 were the same in 1985 and these top ten preferences did not include fish
Three major US bread manufacturers have introduced breads containing extra omega 3 this year.
Martek Biosciences, which announced a deal with leading cereal maker Kellogg's for use of its ingredient in a range of products next year, is also seeing increasing interest in its microalgae-derived omega 3.
It said yesterday that Gold Circle Farms had introduced liquid egg whites containing its vegetarian DHA.
However none of the products have added a new FDA-backed qualified health claim to their labeling.
Since September 2004, foods containing eiscosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3 fatty acids are allowed to carry a qualified health claim stating that they may help to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, responsible for 500,000 deaths annually in the US.
However at the time industry groups expressed their disappointment that the fatty acids had not been given a full health claim. A qualified health claim carries disclaimers that reduce the impact of a health claim.
The importance of omega-3 fatty acids have however been highlighted in the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which will encourage increased consumption both of fish and non-marine sources.

U.N.: Half of world's fish stocks 'fully exploited'
FAO forecast total world consumption of fish may increase by more than 25 percent to 179 million metric tons by 2015, underscoring the urgent need to rebuild depleted stocks.
It said seven of the top 10 marine fish species are already fully exploited or over-exploited, including Chilean jack mackerel, Alaska pollock, Japanese anchovy and blue whiting."

Dairy Industry only cares about economics rather than human health.
Yep milk is milk OK - perfect for baby cows! Full of natural hormones just like human milk - except they are bovine hormones.
Milk Marketing Blog Challenges Tillamook and Dairy Industry to Stand Up to Activist Attacks: "The Center for Global Food Issues (CGFI) charges that Tillamook Creamery, under attack from activists groups funded by the organic and natural products industry, has banned its members use of supplemental bovine somatotropin (rbSTalso known as bovine growth hormone), without addressing the serious ramifications for its members, consumers and the environment.
Supplemental rbST is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as safe, and according to such organizations as the American Medical Association and World Health Organization, milk from cows receiving these supplements is the same, safe nutritious milk from all other cows.
CGFI adds that supplemental rbST use, which allows dairy farmers to produce more milk with fewer cows, has measurable positive environmental impacts.
Before these anti-technology, pure-food activists showed up, were any of their actual customers asking for this change? If Tillamook consumers are at all representative of virtually every piece of credible consumer research on this subject the answer would be no, stated Avery. The vast majority of consumers care about fresh, safe, nutritious, affordable dairy products."
Yes but what about HUMAN health rather than ECONOMIC health??? Do these people not read the reports from the World Health Organisation on preventable diseases? Do they care??

Children who Drink Milk not guaranteed healthy bones.
The U.S. government has gradually increased recommendations for daily calcium intake, largely from dairy products, to between 800 and 1,300 milligrams to promote healthy bones and prevent osteoporosis. But the report, published in the journal Pediatrics, said boosting consumption of milk or other dairy products was not necessarily the best way to provide the minimal calcium intake of at least 400 milligrams per day.
Other ways to obtain the absorbable calcium found in one cup of cow's milk include a cup of fortified orange juice, a cup of cooked kale or turnip greens, two packages of instant oats, two-thirds cup of tofu, or 1-2/3 cups of broccoli, the report said. "

More Vegetables For School Meals helps Kids think.
This report is from December but as Jamie Oliver is doing his school dinner TV thing on Jamies School dinners for UK schools and Super size me is strutting it's stuff for school meals for kids in the USA I though I would post it again.
KIDS WHO HAVE DECENT, NUTRITIOUS SCHOOL DINNERS ARE BETTER BEHAVED AND LEARN MORE!
.....
A report from the Soil Association and Business in the Community has revealed that healthy school meals lead to better behaved pupils who are more alert in class. The two organisations are calling for urgent improvements in the quality of school meals.
The report - which recorded the views of education chiefs from 13 local authorities and two schools in England and Wales - found that pupils who ate meals made with fresh, unprocessed ingredients and who have access to drinking water have better concentration, improved attention spans and are less likely to be hyperactive. They were also found to be calmer and more alert in class.
The report, Looking for Innovation in Healthy School Meals, is published by Business in the Community and the Soil Association, who were encouraged to work together on the project by the Prince of Wales who is president of Business in the Community and patron of the Soil Association.
Healthy school meals are achievable, popular and affordable. The benefits for children and society as a whole are overwhelming. This report provides powerful new evidence to support the welcome policies on school meals just announced by the Government in the Public Health White Paper, says Peter Melchett of the Soil Association."

Vegetable Protein better than Meat and Dairy NEW RESEARCH
How much more evidence do people need?
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - When it comes to high protein diets and health, the source of the protein really does matter, new research suggests.
After following nearly 30,000 women for 15 years, investigators found that women were more likely to die from heart disease if they often substituted red meat for carbohydrates. In contrast, swapping vegetable sources of protein for carbs appeared to protect women from heart disease.
'Our main finding was that animal compared to vegetable sources of protein seem to have a different effect on dying from heart disease,' study author Dr. Linda E. Kelemen from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota told Reuters Health.
For this reason, she recommended that people who want to follow high protein diets should stick with vegetable proteins such as tofu, nuts and peanut butter.
With high protein diets a now-popular eating style, few studies have examined their long-term health effects, and whether different sources of protein make a difference, Kelemen and her team write in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
To investigate, the researchers interviewed 29,017 postmenopausal women about their eating and lifestyle habits, then followed them for 15 years, noting who died and of what cause. All of the women were free of cancer, heart disease and diabetes at the beginning of the study.
The investigators found that women who most often ate vegetable protein in place of carbohydrates and animal protein were 30 percent less likely to die of heart disease.
But the more red meat and dairy products women substituted for carbohydrates, the more their risk of heart disease increased.
No tasty tarts for Welsh town.
If they wanted to be really PC they should be looking for healthy vegan tarts! Dairy Free from sour cream and cheesy titles....
A cookery competition in the Welsh town of Neath has been renamed because of worries the word 'tart' might portray the wrong image.
The Tastiest Tart in the Town contest challenged caterers in Neath to come up with the most tempting dessert.
But the competition has now been renamed The Tastiest Dessert in the Town after the original title raised some eyebrows.
Town centre manager Andrew Shufflebotham, who came up with the name, said: 'Most people were very happy with it but the odd person was not. Therefore I had to withdraw it. We did not want to upset anybody.'
Those who objected to the title felt it was 'a bit close to the mark', said Mr Shufflebotham."
