Iceland created history when it hosted its first ever fully vegetarian state banquet to specially honour visiting Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a vegetarian.

The menu for Monday's banquet -- which included a tomato and sprouts salad, a main course with aubergine and dessert -- perplexed many of the Icelanders invited to the event as also the sizeable non-vegetarian contingent in the presidents entourage.

Icelandic meals are rarely without fish or lamb, and a fully vegetarian meal was a novelty for most of the Nordic islands citizens at the banquet for 250."
