Happy 30th Birthday Vegan Society NSW

Submission to a National Food Plan - Vegan Society NSW

30 years of promoting compassion in NSW

This weekend The Vegan Society of NSW will celebrate 30 years of spreading the vegan message of animal rights, compassion, sustainability and health to Sydney and the State.
“In our 30th year of the Vegan Society, we have achieved a lot. We’ve held six highly successful vegan expos. We have so many enthusiastic and committed members. It’s been a real pleasure to witness the society growing over all these years,” said Greg Mc Farlane, President of the NSW Vegan Society.
The Vegan Society of NSW is of interest to people who care about animal rights, human health and the environment. Vegans refrain from using all animal products such as meat, dairy, eggs, leather and wool. They reject all forms of exploitation of animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.
“Australians deserve to be educated about the many benefits of plant-based diets and supported by government. Until this happens, people can count on the Vegan Society to provide this much needed education and information. We welcome everyone.”
Since Myer Samra and Bill Westerman formed the society in 1981, its many volunteers, presidents and committee members have continued to grow the society to become what it is today – a community of informed and compassionate citizens determined as ever to showcase, promote and celebrate the many benefits of the vegan lifestyle.
The strength of the society is its membership. Many hundreds of people have now benefited from joining the society. The society provides advice and support to help with the transition to a vegan diet. For committed vegans, the society provides social support, activities, and opportunities to be involved in vegan outreach.
Members receive a quarterly newsletter, a free subscription to Living Vegan magazine, vegan shopping discounts as well as opportunities to participate in a variety of social outings, events and festivals.

1 World Day - Vegan is Cool Bitch!

1 World Day:

So here's the latest idea for the World Vegan Day world record attempt for healthy plant eating on Nov 1st - 1:11:11 - 11:11:11

One World Day. The more well seasoned vegan campaigners will recognise the shutting down of people's brains once you mention the word vegan a bit like when you stumble over one of those religious guys on the street with a big placard proclaiming the end of the world, hell , brimstone and the fury of God. Most of us haven't got any time or emotional energy left for more problems, more vexing and worrying imponderables.

If we are going to change the world we need to reach new people not just preach to the converted.

If we can't even get our foot in the door or their brain just drops into screen-saver when we talk vegan then , for those people at least we need to put a different hat on. A new hat that doesn't come with all the baggage of veganism.

Skinny Bitch is a good example - "OMG like you mean like saving the planet and being kinder to animals means I can be like slim and beautiful??? OMG I never knew that! How kewl is that? Awesome!"

Suddenly Vegan is cool. How did that happen?

"A no nonsense tough-love guide for savvy girls who want to stop eating crap and start looking fabulous"

Do you think if it had said "The Vegan Diet" in big red letters on the front it would still have been a world best seller? Would Posh spice still have picked it up for it to be spotted in her handbag?

We are facing a Plantarian revolution my friends we just need to entice more of those naysayers onto the Plantarian road - 1 World Day seems another good stepping stone, another good tool to reach our goal, not instead of but as well as World Vegan Day

Vegan Awards for a Christmas Without Cruelty

Vegan Awards at Christmas Without Cruelty in World Vegan Month Finale!

Super Vegan Awards Animal Aid's Christmas without Cruelty show will see a shower of awards as vegan organisations shower people, companies and products with awards in one of the most successful years for veganism ever.

As world Vegan Month draws to a close it seems vegan organisations are on target to double the number of vegans before the end of the year.

Although the membership of the pedantic, stick in the mud Vegan Society ironically lower than ever, Google trends, other vegan organisations such as Viva! and Animal Aid, feedback from UK vegan festivals, and sales figures from vegan manufacturers expose a rising tide of popularity for a vegan lifestyle.

Vegans are celebrating with a flurry of awards for people and products. The most prestigous of these vegan awards is The Arthur Ling Memorial Award sponored by organic Vegan chocolate manufacturer Plamil Foods. The Arthur ling Award celebrates Ling's innovative spirit and awarded annually to high achievers and projects that benefit the vegan lifestyle.

Rather more for for fun, the back patting Vegan Awards sponsored by Yaoh Hempseed and Hemp Oil products and Veggievision Free Online TV recognise innovative products, eye catching vegan campaigns and publications and leading lights in the independent health food industry

Meanwhile Activeg have initiated the UK Supervegan Awards in an effort to reward Veganism's unsung heroes.

Christmas Without Cruelty Show hosted by Animnal Aid will be at Kensington Town Hall on Sunday 2nd Dec Highlights include speech by Anthony Wedgewood (Tony) Ben and an auctioning off of some 2nd hand knickers from Pretenders icon Chrissie Hynde.

Super Vegetarian Paul McCartney at Bristol Vegan Fayre

Embargoed until 00.007 April 1st - Bristol Vegan Fayre

Paul McCartney to sing Hey Nude in Bristol City

Super Vegetarian Sir Paul McCartney is to Head Line-up of Vegan Stars to Play at the 5th International Bristol Vegan Fayre

The World's most famous vegan, Ex Beatle Sir Paul McCartney (64) (sponsored by Red bull - gives you wings) is to headline a host of vegan stars (sponsored by supergreen vegetarian cosmetics company Lush) at the International ethical living festival at the 5th Bristol Vegan Fayre in the heart of Bristol on the 9th & 10th June. thanks to Harvey Goldsmith.

The World's most famous vegetarian, Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney (64) (sponsored by Red Bull - gives you wings) is to sing "We all live in a yellow aubergine" and "Hey Nude" and headline a host of vegan stars (some of whom plan to sing naked) at the International ethical living festival at the 5th Bristol Vegan Fayre in the heart of Bristol on the 9th & 10th June.

Other well known veggie stars (sponsored by Supergreen Vegetarian Cosmetics company Lush Cosmetics ) include Coldplay's Chris Martin singing sonny and cher number " I got you babe" with his wife Gwyneth Paltrow, M People Heather Small singing the UK Olympic bid anthem, Moby performing with David Bowie performing a vegan version of 'Old McDonalds had a Factory Farm', Bryan Adams in a duet with vegan rock chick Avril Lavigne singing 'Everything I do I do it for you', and Annie Lennox and Morrisey performing a disco version of 'Meat is Murder'. Legendary 80's political reggae rockers The Beat will also be playing no doubt singing "Stand Down Tony!" rather than their massive early 80's hit 'Stand Down Margaret '(Thatcher)

Following health problems legendary rock promoter and event manager Harvey Goldsmith has given his services for free to pull all these stars together for the vegan event of the year.

Bristol Vegan fayre organiser Paul D'Uverwun (69) said " When Harvey phoned offering free help to raise the profile of healthy vegan diets we just assumed it was someone impersonating him"

Tim Barford from Hemp food company Yaoh the main sponsor of the event said " I still can't believe all these stars are playing at our Vegan festival - We have doubled in size since last year and the Festival is in a better bigger location and over a whole weekend and have seemingly achieved what many considered to be the impossible. Despite all that I won't believe all these people are playing until I see them on the day."

Sir Paul McCartney's late wife's company Linda McCartney Foods, now owned by Hain Europe , is said to have offered free vegan sausages for all the expected 20,000 visitors, and a host of other top vegetarian companies are clamouring to be involved. But even vegans still need to make healthy choices, and the vegan food on offer will be vetted by leading Harley Street Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston who said "The theme of this show is about ethics, sustainability and health - unfortunately some leading vegetarian products are still currently made with hydrogenated fat which doesn't fit in with that theme."

A spokesperson from The Vegan Society Mr Joe King (35) said today " A line up of world class celebrity stars like this is sure to bring in the crowds and help us towards our target of doubling the number of Vegans by the World Vegan day 2007 on November the first"

Vegetarian Society representative from Bristol Miss Ida Nboleevit (16) " The vegetarian society has been trying to arrange a concert with a line up like this for over 150 years - we take our hats off to The Vegan Society who have done it in only 63 years"

Harvey Goldsmith is rumoured to have pulled off the star studded line up for this event by sending a hamper of the latest hype foods to catch celebrity favour including hemp oil, hemp seeds, hemp protein powder and a free hemp milk maker to all the stars involved generously donated by Yaoh Hemp foods.
